Friendly Seagulls FMS#677

I've been playing with the Friendly Seagulls stamp set I got for free during Sale-a-bration last month, and decided to use it for this week's Freshly Made Sketches challenge.   Click here to see my first effort with this set, which was a top three winner in the Atlantic Hearts Sketch Challenge.  What fun!  Here's the sketch:

Here's My Card:

I love the new Textured Notes dies that came in my last order so I used them to cut the blue and the white mattes. I added some texture to the Balmy Blue matte by embossing it with the So Swirly embossing folder.

Although the texture is great I don't like large embossing folders like this. They are a pain, taking up too much room in my storage area. I guess the only advantage for me would be getting two mattes with one swipe of the machine.

I always try and finish the insides of my cards even if it's just to add a little stamping.  How about you, do you add sentiments, stamping or other designs to the inside of your card?

I see some folks just leave the inside blank for writing their message, but I like to add a matte or two.  How about you, do you leave it blank or add mattes?

Supplies:

Stamps and Dies:

  • Friendly Seagulls #164961 (r)
Cardstock:
  • Basic White card base 8 1/2" x 5 1/2" Scored at 4 1/4"
  • Basic White - three pieces 3" x 1 1/2" for mattes
  • Basic White inside matte 3 3/4" x 5"
  • Boho Blue 4 x 5 1/4" for outside and inside mattes
Ink:
  • Memento Black
  • Boho Blue
  • Crumb Cake
  • Blends - Mango Melody, L/D Gray Granite, Poppy Red, SU700
Accessories:
  • Dimensionals
  • So Swirly Embossing Folder for Waves on Boho Blue Matt
  • Textured Notes Dies for mattes
  • Scissors for fussy cutting
  • Shiny sequins

So that's my card for this week's FMS challenge. I'm quite pleased with how it turned out. The three rectangles were easy to work with in creating focal points and I know I'm going to enjoy making more cards using this sketch as well as the Friendly Seagull stamp set. Both are great ideas.

I'd love to hear your thoughts.  Do you like the seagulls?  Would you send a card like this to a friend or family member?  Can you think of any cute sayings that would go with these images besides the ones I used?  I'm working on that one for my next card with this set.  Have a great week and......

Peace on Earth Challenge #70

I stopped by the Peace on Earth Challenge blog today to check out their latest mood board and was thoroughly taken with the vintage Christmas inspiration.  Here it is:

The images on this mood board remind me of the vintage Christmas cards my mom used to send back in the day.  Love them all!

Here is my card:

When you first looked at the mood board, what jumped out for you?  For me, the open Christmas door captured my attention as it looked so inviting, calling you in.  But then, my focus quickly shifted to the skates and sled propped against the brick wall.  How iconic are these as winter symbols? Growing up winter games and recreation were a highlight of the snowy season.  Almost everyone I knew owned skates or a sled.  Often you'd see them propped against the outside door drying off after a hard play.  So, despite the fact that many other entries used the same inspiration from the mood board, I decided to throw my hat into the ring, and do the same.

For this card the background seemed so important in setting the stage.  I remembered having some lovely brick and wood background papers in my stash, so I dug through until I found this one.  This pinkish toned brick paper was one of several sheets in the long retired "In Good Taste" 6 x 6 dsp pack.  I love the colour and 3-D brick imagery, in this paper.  I added a Cherry Cobbler mat beneath the paper to ground it and help tie in the other red elements in the card design.

For the inside of the card I stamped an image from another old Stampin' Up! stamp set called Winter Memories.  I stamped the image of the sleigh and cardinals in full strength Crumb Cake ink and then stamped the sentiment in Cherry Cobbler ink through the center.  Again I used a red mat to pull everything together for this layer.

Supplies:

Stamp Set(s) and Dies:
  • Sophisticated Sled #164340 (note this is part of the OLE - Online Exclusive product line in 2024/25
  • Winter Memories #127937 (R) (sled and wreath inside card)
  • Christmas Gleaming #150464 (R) (Merry Christmas sentiment)
  • 8 1/2 x 5 1/2" Whisper White card base scored at 4 1/4"; 3 7/8" x 5" Whisper White mat for inside the card.  Scraps of Whisper White for the die cut skates and the Merry Christmas sentiment.
  • 4" x 5 1/4" Cherry Cobbler mats for the front and inside of the card; 1 1/2" x 4" piece of Cherry Cobbler for the sled frame and skate laces die cuts.
  • Scraps of Garden Green for the two leaf die cuts which I cut in half so I could spread them around the top of the sled and the skates.
  • 2 1/2" x 4" piece of Crumb Cake for the sled topper and rail.
  • Scrap of silver foil for the skate blades . Tip:  I used a scrap of adhesive sheet behind the silver foil before die cutting.  When you're working with tiny pieces it's easier to do this to adhere them to your design.

I love that fat little cardinal.  He was easy to color with blends.  I stamped the skates image in Cherry Cobbler ink and then die cut the image.  It looked quite flat against the sleigh so I decided to pop up two of the die cut skates from the Sophisticated Sled die set on top with dimensionals.  Voila that looked 100% better.  I added some Star Form Glitter dots in Red and Silver to the leaves and the joints on the sleigh.  That makes for easy mailing.  The Merry Christmas sentiment is also popped up on mini dimensionals.

Inks:
  • Cherry Cobbler ink and Cherry Cobbler Blends for colouring bird.
  • Crumb Cake
  • Momento Black ink for cardinal
Accessories:
  • Tombow Glue
  • Dimensionals
  • Adhesive sheets for skates
  • Starform Glitter Dots in Red and Silver
Well that's it for this entry.  I hope you like the scene I created.  How about playing along with this challenge at Peace on Earth you can enter up until September 1st, 2024.  Completing challenges is a great way to build a stash of Christmas Cards.  Why not give it a try.
