Welcome to this week's Watercooler Wednesday challenge. It's my turn to host and with Mother's Day just around the corner I decided to dedicate this challenge to "Moms".
Whether you're making a card for your own mom, your step-mother or some other very special woman in your life, I invite you to share your creation with us. This challenge runs from Wednesday May 10th through 5:00pm MT Monday May 15th, 2017. I hope you'll join in the fun!
My mom, at 95 years young, is such a big part of my everyday life. Before her arthritis and vision problems took hold, she liked to make cards too.
I marveled at her simple colourful creations which more often than not involved flowers. So, today's card is dedicated to my very special mom. Here's to you mom!
My Card:
This card style is called a “Funnel” "Tunnel" card.
You can find directions for making one on Youtube or Splitcoast Stampers. Although this fancy fold looks like it might be complicated, it's actually very easy
and quick to assemble.
I have to give a shout out to the Oh So Succulent stamp set for the excellent Mother's Day sentiments that are in this set. They really rock! |
Supplies:
Stamp Sets: Touches of Texture #143251, Oh So Succulent (R) #142992, Butterfly Basics #137154
Ink: Watermelon Wonder, Old Olive, Calypso Corral, Sweet Sugarplum, Flirty Flamingo, Blushing Bride
Card Stock: Whisper White, Old Olive, Flirty Flamingo
Accessories: Big Shot, Paper Trimmer, Stitched Shapes Thinlet Dies, Oval Dies (R), 7 Basic Rhinestones (small), Dimensionals, Tom Bow Glue.
Here are the specs for making this card.
One Sheet Wonder:
I loved the fresh spring colours in this week's banner and decided to use the same colour scheme to create a hand stamped background for my card. I started with an 8 1/2" x 11" piece of Whisper White card stock to create a One Sheet Wonder page and a variety of floral and nature stamps. This is the order that I stamped:
- Randomly Stamp large flower from Touches of Texture stamp set - this is a two step stamp so I stamped the outline image in Watercolour Wonder and the solid image in Flirty Flamingo.
-Randomly stamp the medium sized flower in Flirty Flamingo
-Randomly stamp the small flower in Sweet Sugarplum
-Randomly stamp the large ferns from Butterfly Basics in Old Olive
-Randomly stamp the honeycomb in a mixture of Old Olive and Sweet Sugarplum - I coloured the stamp with markers to achieve a mixture of colour.
-Randomly stamp the splotches from Touches of Texture in Blushing Bride, Old Olive and Flirty Flamingo - I coloured the stamp with markers to achieve a mottled effect.
Note*: While I had all the stamps out I stamped the inside center of the card base with the sentiment "Because of you I am me" in Old Olive ink and then randomly stamped in an oval shape around the sentiment.
Card Front:
Card Base: 8 1/2" x 5 1/2" Whisper White card stock scored at 4 1/4"
1st Layer: 5 1/4" x 4 Flirty Flamingo
2nd Layer: 5 1/8" x 3 7/8" Old Olive
3rd Layer: 5" x 3 3/4" Whisper White cut from the One Sheet Wonder piece
- Adhere these layers and card base together with Tom Bow Glue
Oval Layers: Cut the following using the Stitched Shapes and retired Oval Thinlet Dies:
-Cut out 1 small Whisper White stitched oval and stamp the "Happy Mother's Day" sentiment from the Oh So Succulent stamp set in Old Olive ink
-Cut out 1 medium One Sheet Wonder stitched oval
-Cut out 1 3" Flirty Flamingo oval cut with the retired Oval Thinlet Dies
-Cut out 1 3 1/4" Old Olive stitched oval
-Adhere all the ovals together with Tom Bow glue and then mount to the center front of the card with Dimensionals.
-Stamp a Dragon Fly on Old Olive card stock in Old Olive ink and fussy cut out the image. Adhere with Dimensionals to the bottom of the layered ovals. Cut a strip of 7 small Basic Rhinestones and adhere to the center of the Dragonfly.
Cut layered panels and “Funnel” "Tunnel" insert as follows:
- Cut 8 x 5" piece of Old Olive card stock for the “
- Cut 2 Flirty Flamingo Panels 1 3/4" x 4 7/8"
- Cut 2 Old Olive Panels 1 5/8" x 4 3/4"
- Cut 2 One Sheet Wonder panels 1 1/2" x 4 5/8"
- Card Base - see (*) note above in One Sheet Wonder
So that's it for today's post. How did you like this card? I think my mom will love it. I hope you've checked out the rest of the cards created by our very talented Design Team members for this challenge. Wow there are some very inspiring designs. I know I'm going to be CASEing some of them.

Penny, the card for Mom is gorgeous. I am sure she will be able to see all the beautiful colors you have chosen. This is a "Wow" card for sure. What a unique card fold. Your card inside and out is so creative.
Thanks Heather. I'm sure she will like it. I usually spend time drawing a mental picture of what's on the cards so she can interpret it in her mind, for example giving the colors and what they resemble, telling her about the different flowers and the ferns. She'll be able to feel the rhinestones on the dragonfly and the layered sentiments and she can trace her hand around the funnel insert so she'll be able to visualize that. It's a different way of thinking when you're making a card for someone who's blind, but it actually works and we spend some quality time while we're going through the card's makeup. It means a lot to her. Hugs.
What a lovely card, Penny. I've made this style of card before but had no idea it was called a funnel card. Good to know---especially if I decide to look it up sometime. The colours are so beautiful in your background stamping. More and more I'm turning to "stamping my own" rather than using DSP because that way I can control the images as well as the colours. Your hand stamped "DSP" is an excellent example of the wonderful results. Love the glitter of the rhinestones on that dragonfly and the pretty layered oval for your sentiment. I'm glad your mother is with you and able to enjoy the lovely cards you create for her.
First of all, Happy your mom's still alive,2nd I'm glad you can share this card with her verbally as well as by touch. My mom passed away in March of this year. I'm sure you're treasuring your mom while you can!
I've looked in both places you suggested for the "Tunnel Card" directions. As I've never heard of this term before, I wanted directions on how to do it. But, couldn't find them anywhere. I even went to You Tube search and type it in. Any other ideas? I really want to make this card for a wedding Thank you so much for sharing with us, it means a lot to me!
Gloria thanks for your note. I'm so sorry to hear of your recent loss of your mom, that's so sad. Sending you a hug across the wire.
I'm glad that you liked my card and want to make one of your own. I'm sorry you couldn't find directions for the Tunnel card on You Tube or Splitcoast Stampers. I did included all the cutting measurements etc for the card on my post, so they are there and you could use them. But, if you are a visual person and need to see one put together here is a link to Becky's place, a treasure trove of fancy fold cards and tutorials. This particular link is directly to a Tunnel card. I hope that helps you out. If not contact me directly on my email on my blog, and I'll try and help you out. http://beccysplace.blogspot.ca/2010/09/technique-class-tunnel-cards.html
Heidi and Gloria. Thanks for pointing out the error of my ways. I went back in after reading both your comments and checked my post and I see that I misspelled the name of the card. I had it as "funnel" when it should have been "tunnel". I've updated and corrected the post and want to apologize for any confusion this has caused you and others. There are lots of links for "tunnel" cards on YouTube and on Split Coast.
